This is my first post, my name is William I have been training in Martial arts since I was 16. I am now 24 and more confused than ever about something as simple as meditation. The way I see it there are several ways to meditate and each one yields amazing results. However, there is one experience with meditation that I am not sure what to call or even sure if I can be able to describe it correctly. I am almost addicted to pushing energy through my body, it is the most amazing and envigorating experience I have ever felt. However, there was an experience recently that got me worried. I was getting ready for a speech class final and waiting for my turn I sat in a chair and began to meditate to pass the time. I started to move "energy" through my body starting with my feet then up to my torso, arms, etc... however, for the first time I was able to move it into the spine. Something I had been unable to do (or never really thought of doing) up till that moment. After I did that I held

(continued from last post)
After I did that I held onto that "charging up" the "energy" (these are loosely defined terms and I apologize for this I simply don't have the ability yet to describe them any other way) in my spinal cord and it built up a lot. More than I had dealt with before, after a while the energy exploded into the rest of my body and I felt such a strong desire to move, run, jump, anything. I felt so "charged" that I couldn't possibly sit in this chair much longer and wait for my speech. Luckily my turn was soon and I got it done and ran out of there, jumped in my car and in a wierd crazy fit drove off like a maniac....something I wouldn't normally do. Now is this sort of situation something that is potentially good or bad? What can I learn from it? What can I use from it?

Hi William. Thanks for the nice post.
A few things. Meditation is perceived as many to be "simple". However, it can be very difficult. I often tell my students that it is hard for most people, especially in today's society, to sit still and be quiet for five minutes. Meditation take quite a bit of time to explore and to get proficient at.
Regarding moving your energy. I would simply caution you to be careful. I agree it is amazing and invigorating to connect with and explore your internal energy. But as with everything you can over do it.
There's a great line in the Tai Chi classes that states "Doing too much is the same as doing too little." Don't over do it. Take your time and explore your body as you move your energy. Don't push the energy or force it around, simply "let" it move through your body.

Regarding the energy through your spine. Again I would caution you to be careful. The spine is a delicate area and we must use care when exploring it.
In your situation I would highly recommend trying the Golden Light Meditation on our site. I do this ever day. In the meditation we feel through our entire spine from the base of spine all the way up to the base of the skull. As you first explore the meditation simply try to feel these areas. As you get more proficient at it you can then start to move energy through these areas. But as I said, please be careful. Years ago I actually injured a vertebrae in my spine by trying to hard to loosen the tension. It took me a while before I could return to that area in my meditation practice.
I hope that helps. Good luck on your journey.

Thank you so much for this extremely useful information. I apologize for the amount of time it took me to respond, however; do not let that make you think I have not kept this enormous resource in mind. I actually think that this site will be very useful for me in the coming months as I prepare myself for military service. I have a lot of barriers to push past in the next 3 months and the more information on the inner workings of my body the better.

No apologies necessary William. I'm glad I could help.
Good luck in your preparation for military service. I hope this website will help you along on your path. And thank you ahead of time for your service. I come from a military family and understand the sacrifices involved.
