So many Qi Gong
So many Qi Gong

I have learned from books, magazines and other Qi Gong students that there is a vast array of Qi Gongs, some only decades old but highly acclaimed, and others that have been practised for over a thousand years. How does one sort through so many practises to find the one that's best for you? I am new at this, but it's obvious that trying something new every few days in order to wade through them all will accomplish very little. How do the members of this forum decide which to practise, and how long before you decide that this Qi Gong is the one that you want to devote your life to?

Hi Joe. I'll give you my two cents for what it's worth. Perhaps others will chime in as well.
First, I think it is very important that you find a good teacher. You may go through several before you find one that understands your needs and goals. I've been studying under the same master for over 10 years. I was truly blessed to find him.
Once you are learning Qi Gong I do not think it's necessary to decide on one type and devote your life to it. As you mentioned there are hundreds if not thousands of different styles and types of Qi Gong. Some very similar and some wildly different. I currently know about 30 different Qi Gong "sets". I practice about 3-5 on a daily basis for standard maintenance. When specific issues arrive in my body I will pull out different styles which I know impact that area of the body.
One important thing is that when you are learning a new movement or form make sure you put in the time necessary to learn it at least to a moderate level before discounting it and moving on to the next one. You need to at least "feel" how the form is effecting your body and your internal energy before deciding whether it's right for you.
In my experience it may take a beginner 30-40 different sessions practicing a particular movement before they begin to understand how it is impacting their body. That may seem like a lot but remember these are very deep exercises that require a high degree of mental clarity and concentration. We're not just going to the gym and walking on a treadmill.
I will on occasion learn a new movement and it takes me 15-20 times before I begin to understand it.
Well, I'm not sure I answered your question. I kinda rambled there a bit.
I hope that helps at least a little bit on your journey of discovery.
Best of luck to you.

Definately good advice, I'd say the regular practice is what counts.
Taking time to clear your mind and relax your body does wonders either way.
I've been practicing various body awareness and energy methods for only two years, but my sense of guidance has grown. I feel physical tension and emotional change with increasing clarity. Still working on the spirit, I am very new to the microcosmic orbit...
The abilities of deep relaxation and simeltaneous awareness grow no matter the details. You are doing something incredible for your health and state of mind. Pick one or two regular energy cultivation forms for a period such as one or two years. Practice. :) A very small portion of your life... at the same time it provides increased direction and growth for the entirety of it.
My advice: Practice over theory, you've definately educated yourself on the technical aspects, Jump in!
Enjoy,
